それは生物的な素質です、と言いたいところですが、それほど確信はありません。子供の頃は、他の子供たちに比べて適応能力に乏しかったわけではありませんでした。でも、集団の中では居心地の悪さを感じていましたね。人間が、集団に属しているという感覚を持つのが好きなのは、私たちが何よりもコミュニケーションの中で生きていて、他の人々と意見が合うことを好むからだ。ということはとてもよく理解できます。しかし、私はそれを特に大切に感じたことはありませんでした。

Professor Südhof, when you were younger you were a rebel and prized freedom above all else. Where does this need to not fit in come from?
It would be tempting to say that it is a biological predisposition, but I am not sure about that. When I was a child, there was nothing to indicate that I was less able to adapt than others. But I have never felt at ease in groups. I understand why people like to be part of a group, because communication is an integral part of our lives, and we like to align ourselves with others. But that has never been particularly important to me.

Herr Professor Südhof, Sie waren in Ihrer Jugend ein Rebell, dem die Freiheit das Wichtigste war. Woher kommt dieses Bedürfnis, sich nicht einzupassen?
Es wäre verführerisch zu sagen, dass das eine biologische Veranlagung ist, aber ich bin mir dessen nicht sicher. In meiner Kindheit wies nichts darauf hin, dass ich weniger anpassungsfähig war als andere. Ich habe mich allerdings nie in Gruppen wohlgefühlt. Ich kann sehr gut verstehen, dass Menschen das Gruppengefühl lieben, weil wir vor allem in der Kommunikation leben und gern mit anderen übereinstimmen. Aber ich habe das nie besonders geschätzt.
