とても興奮しました。びっくりしたのです。私はどちらかといえば主流から外れたテーマに取り組んでいますからね。でも、賞をいただいたということは、外の世界の誰かが本当に私の論文を読み、私の研究の意味を理解してくれたということです。国家科学賞が海洋生物学の分野に授与されたのは初めてのことだと思います。ですから、プロクロロコッカスがこのような形で認められたことは感動的でした。

How did you feel when President Obama awarded you the Medal of Science?
That was exciting. I was astonished. There I was, working away at what I would call a rather esoteric topic, and receiving the award meant that somebody out there had actually been reading my papers and understanding the bigger picture of my work. I don’t think a Medal of Science has ever been awarded in the field of biological oceanography, so it was thrilling for Prochlorococcus to be recognized in that way.

Den Preis zu bekommen bedeutete, dass jemand da draußen tatsächlich meine Arbeiten gelesen und die Bedeutung meiner Forschung verstanden hatte. Ich glaube, die Medal of Science ist noch nie auf dem Gebiet der biologischen Ozeanografie verliehen worden. Deshalb war es ergreifend, dass Prochlorococcus auf diese Weise Anerkennung fand.
