女性科学者としてフランスで仕事をすることは、ドイツやアメリカと比べていかがですか？
アメリカでは科学にもっと資金を投入しています。女性の地位は改善していますが、まだまだ難しいことはあります。ドイツでは女性科学者であることはハードです。男性の方が容易に教授職に就けますからね。フランスではそうではありません。ここでは継続的なポジションが提供されます。そのポジションは研究機関ではなく、その人個人のものなのです。ですから、ひとつの部門から他の部門に移動することもできれば、研究所を変えることもできます。私はパスツール研究所にポジションを持ち、もう48年経ちますが、今も変わらず満足しています。

What’s it like being a female scientist in France compared with Germany and the US?
In the US, there is more money around for science in general. Women are increasingly recognized but there are still difficulties in their recognition. In Germany, it’s tough for female scientists as the men are the ones who get more easily the professorships. You don’t see that in France. Here you’re offered permanent positions. So a position isn’t attached to the centre but to the person, allowing you to migrate from one department to another or from one institution to another. I’ve held my position at Pasteur for 48 years’ now and I’m still happy.

Wie ist es, in Frankreich Wissenschaftlerin zu sein, im Unterschied zu Deutschland und den USA?
In den USA steckt mehr Geld in der Wissenschaft. Frauen bekommen zunehmend Anerkennung, aber es gibt immer noch Schwierigkeiten. Deutschland ist für Wissenschaftlerinnen härter, weil Männer leichter die Professuren bekommen. In Frankreich ist das anders, hier werden Ihnen dauerhafte Positionen angeboten. Diese sind nicht an ein Forschungszentrum, sondern an Personen gebunden. So können Sie von Abteilung zu Abteilung ziehen oder von einem Institut zum anderen. Ich habe meine Position am Pasteur-Institut seit 48 Jahren und bin immer noch glücklich damit.
