Professor Avnir, why did you study science?
I was born as a scientist. When I was three years old, there was a food rationing in Israel. Our family had one chicken that laid one egg a day, and my task was to eat that egg. I understood that the chicken was extremely important to the well-being of the family. Therefore I took a feather, planted it in the ground and watered it, so that a new chicken would grow. This was my first scientific experiment, and of course it failed, which is an extremely important lesson.

Professor Avnir, warum haben Sie ein wissenschaftliches Fach studiert?
Ich wurde als Wissenschaftler geboren. Als ich drei Jahre alt war, wurden in Israel die Lebensmittel rationiert. Unsere Familie hatte ein Huhn, das ein Ei pro Tag legte, und meine Aufgabe war, das Ei zu essen. Ich begriff, dass das Huhn sehr wichtig für das Wohlergehen der Familie war. Deshalb nahm ich eine Feder, pflanzte sie in die Erde ein und goss sie, damit daraus ein neues Huhn wächst. Dies war mein erstes wissenschaftliches Experiment, das natürlich schiefging, was eine sehr wichtige Lektion für mich war.
