働き始めた時、私は「唯一の女性」であることが多かったのです。守りの姿勢に入らざるを得ないことが多く、また、尊重されていないと感じました。腹を立てた時の私はあまりにダイレクトで、批判的で、歩み寄ることをほぼしませんでした。また、男性が持っていた多くの決まりを、当時の私はまだ知りませんでした。私は嫌われるような決断をすることも恐れません。でも、仕事をしていく中で、ある種の交際法を学ぶことを余儀なくされました。

Professor Nüsslein-Volhard, you have been considered to be “difficult” your whole professional life. Why is that?
At the start of my career, I was often the only woman in the room. A lot of the time I was on the defensive and I didn’t feel that I was being respected. I was often too direct and critical, and not particularly conciliatory, if something annoyed me. I also wasn’t familiar with many of the rules of the game that men followed at the time. I don’t shy away from unpopular decisions. But I did have to learn certain business etiquette rules.

Frau Professorin Nüsslein-Volhard, Ihr ganzes Berufsleben galten Sie als »schwierig«. Warum?
Zu Beginn meines Berufslebens war ich häufig die einzige Frau. Ich war oft in der Defensive und fühlte mich häufig nicht respektiert. Ich war oft viel zu direkt und kritisch, wenig konziliant, wenn mich etwas ärgerte. Auch habe ich damals viele Spielregeln der Männer noch nicht gekannt. Ich scheue mich nicht vor unpopulären Entscheidungen. Aber ich musste gewisse Umgangsformen im Geschäftsleben lernen.
