レメルソンMIT賞を女性として初めて、そして化学者として初めて受賞なさいました。賞金50万ドルという賞ですね。
大変な金額でした。この賞は、卓越した技術革新に贈られるものです。受賞した時、私は自分が実際は発明家でもあるのだということに気がつきました。発明はすでにいくつかしていて、特許も持っており、ちょうど会社をひとつ興したところだったのです。受賞式の際には、ケンブリッジのマサチューセッツ工科大学で講義をする機会が得られましたが、この大学は父が教授としてずっと勤めていたところでした。講義には両親まで来てくれたのです。なかなかクールな出来事でしたね。

You were the first woman and chemist who received the Lemelson–MIT Prize. It is endowed with half a million dollars.
That was a lot of money! This prize is for outstanding technological inventions, so being awarded it, made me realize, that I might actually be also an inventor. I already had a couple of inventions and patents and I just started a company. And at the prize ceremony I had the opportunity to give a lecture at MIT in Cambridge, where my father had been a professor his whole life. My parents even came to hear my lecture. That was pretty cool!

Sie waren die erste Frau und Chemikerin, die den Lemelson-MIT-Preis gewann. Er ist mit einer halben Million Dollar dotiert.
Das war viel Geld! Dieser Preis wird für herausragende technische Innovationen verliehen. Als ich ihn bekam, wurde mir klar, dass ich tatsächlich ebenfalls eine Erfinderin sein könnte. Ich hatte bereits ein paar Erfindungen gemacht, hielt einige Patente und hatte gerade eine Firma gegründet. Bei der Preisverleihung bot sich mir die Gelegenheit, eine Vorlesung am MIT in Cambridge zu halten, wo mein Vater sein Leben lang als Professor tätig war. Sogar meine Eltern kamen zu dieser Vorlesung. Das war ziemlich cool.
