Germany’s Climate Policy — Challenges and Milestones
December 22, 2020 [by Toru Kumagai] Germany is one of the most ambitious countries in the world in its effort to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions. The Merkel administration enacted the Klimaschutzgesetz (Climate Protection Law) on December 18, 2019, making the country the first in the world to mandate by law that its CO2 emissions targets should be achieved. Nevertheless, the transition towards a decarbonised economy will not go smoothly.

Human-centric Artificial Intelligence: 2nd French-German-Japanese Symposium
From November 16 to 20, 2020, the French Embassy to Japan and the German Centre for Research and Innovation Tokyo (DWIH Tokyo) together with the AI Japan R&D Network conducted the 2nd French-German-Japanese Symposium on “Human-centric Artificial Intelligence”. The event was held completely online in a virtual immersive environment, which allowed participants and speakers to network in conference halls, breakout rooms and even on a virtual beach through avatars.

Mayors of Bochum and Tsukuba discuss post-Corona-society
During the opening event of the “Tsukuba Global Science Week” on September 28 2020, the mayors of the cities of Tsukuba (Dr. Tatsuo Igarashi) and Bochum (Thomas Eiskirch) discussed with high-ranking scientists how a society after Corona should and ought to look like. In doing so, they especially went into detail on the close collaboration between cities and universities.

Nobel Prize in Physics
Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to DAAD Alumnus
This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Prof. Dr Reinhard Genzel. He was awarded the prize with his American colleague Andrea Ghez for their research on black holes. Prof. Dr Genzel has previously received funding from the DAAD.

DFG to Fund Nine Trilateral Artificial Intelligence Projects
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is funding nine artificial intelligence projects in cooperation with the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR, France) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST, Japan). The nine projects selected to receive funding will be launched on 16 November 2020 at the 2nd trilateral AI Symposium.
