Theoretical Sciences Visiting Program (TSVP)
[Deadline: 2022/09/30] The Theoretical Sciences Visiting Program (TSVP) was launched in June 2021, with the goal of bringing leading theoretical researchers to the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) for extended visits. In keeping with OIST’s interdisciplinary mission, the TSVP spans all theoretical sciences including, but not limited to, mathematics, theoretical physics, computational sciences, and theoretical life sciences.
The TSVP encompasses two separate activities, Visiting Scholars and Thematic Programs. Visiting Scholars (VS) are individual visitors, usually staying at OIST from 3 to 12 months. From 2023 the TSVP will also host Thematic Programs (TPs), where several researchers visit OIST at one time (2 weeks to 3 months). Where it fits the goals and timeframe of the TP, a symposium linked to the program can be hosted at OIST. Calls for Visiting Scholars and pre-proposals for Thematic Programs are open until September 30.
Please note that the two branches of the TSVP have slightly different scopes: Visiting Scholars should have the potential to interact with OIST research units, whereas Thematic Programs do not need to be linked to current OIST research, nor do they need to have an internal coordinator. Nonetheless, the benefit of a Thematic Program to OIST will be a selection criterion.
1) First Call for Thematic Program Pre-Proposals
We are excited to launch Thematic Activity as new part of the TSVP, with an open call for pre-proposals.
Thematic Programs (TPs) are expected to be held at OIST for 2 weeks to 3 months, starting in the second half of 2023. TPs will be hosted by a group of two or more researchers (coordinators) who will be invited to stay at OIST for the duration of the TP. Successful proposals will be provided with the financial and administrative support needed to bring participants to OIST, 4-8 of whom are expected to be present at any one time. Where it fits the goals and timeframe of the program, a symposium linked to the program can be hosted at OIST. While the scope of the Thematic Program should be theoretical, a diverse base of participants is encouraged, which may include experimental scientists.

2) Open Call for Visiting Scholars FY2023
Visiting Scholars have been arriving through the TSVP since March 2022, and now we are starting the call for FY2023 (April 2023-March 2024).
Visiting Scholars will have the opportunity to carry out independent research at OIST, and to interact with one or more OIST Research Units during their stay. Visits will usually be of 3 to 12 months, with support provided for travel, accommodation and living expenses at the level of per diem.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field and be independent researchers, i.e., should have an academic standing equivalent to senior postdoc, junior group leader, or faculty member at a research-intensive institution.
