[Deadline: 2021/4/30] The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the State of Saxony are organising an ideas competition to select concepts for two new large-scale research centres in the state. The best proposals will be considered further during a six-month conceptual phase and will receive funding of up to €500,000.

Germany has decided to phase out coal mining. As a structural aid measure for the coal-mining areas affected by the coal phase-out, the establishment of two new large-scale research centres in Lusatia in Saxony and in the Central German coal-mining area is planned. In order to prepare for the establishment of the two new large-scale research centres, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the State of Saxony are holding an ideas competition to select the best concepts for the new centres.

The competition is aimed at outstanding scientists in Germany and abroad and will serve to determine the thematic orientation and location of the new large-scale research centres. BMBF intends to recruit the best minds for this special task, who will serve as founding directors of the centres. Excellent scientists from Japan can also participate.
