Can CCS/CCU contribute to reach ‘net zero’?

As many other countries, Japan as well as the EU and Germany have committed to decarbonize their economies and reach “net zero” GHG emissions by 2050 the latest and 2045 respectively. While the goal is clear, the pathway towards net zero is yet to be defined. The need for the use of carbon capture and storage and use (CCS/ CCU) in order to deal with remaining CO2 emissions is controversially discussed.
